32 Amazing Essential Oil Uses that Can Improve Your Life

A couple of months back I found out that for a while my mother sold essential oils or at least bought the pack to be a consultant. This intrigued me because I wanted to know more about what they did. I had some warts on my hands that needed to be removed and it was stated that a few of the oils would help solve the problem.

As I learn more about what the different oils do, I am amazed at how much they can help with day to day life, especially for a person who is looking to be as all-natural as possible. So, without further ado, here is my beginner’s list of things that essential oils can do for our lives.

Practical Uses for Essential Oils

Household Issues

Harsh chemicals are not any fun but here are some different, more environmental ways to clean your house.

1. All-Purpose Spray

Mix together three drops each of lemon oil and tea tree oil. Add 1 cup warm water and place in a spray bottle. Spray problematic area and wipe clean to disinfect.

2. Bathtub Scrub

Mix half a cup of baking soda, half a cup of vinegar and five drops of lime oil. Place onto the dirty area, let soak for five minutes then scrub off using a damp rag.

3. Vegetable Wash

Fill sink basin up with water and add two drops of lemon oil. Rub the produce in the sink and rinse.

4. Fresh Smelling Laundry

Add five drops of your favorite scent to your laundry. Especially good if you make your own laundry detergent.

5. Burnt Pans and Pots

Fill the burnt pot with water and add a drop or two of lemon oil. Boil for five minutes, pour out the water and wipe clean.

6. Carpet Cleaner

Mix twenty drops of tea tree oil with Borax to make carpet powder.

7. Eliminate Mold

While I’m not sure it will completely go away- it’s worth a try. The word is you mix tea tree oil to your diffuser to get rid of mold.

8. Spot Free Rinse

Add a few drops of lemon oil to your dishwater for a spot free rinse without having to hand dry.

For Life: Diffuser

Essential oils might help us get through the everyday things we had not thought about something other than medicine being able to heal.

For each of these, you want to put a drop or two in a diffuser.

I am; however, all for as natural as possible, so here are some ideas next time you:

9. Have Anxiety

Lavender and Frankincense will help you feel better.

Side note: I am going to try this in my classroom and see how it works!

10. To Fight Depression

Wild orange, geranium, and Ylang Ylang. While I am not sure what the last one is I am betting the geranium would remind you of being outside and studies have shown that being outside helps. Try putting this mixture by a window and sitting in the room for a while.

11. Migraines

Peppermint, Marjoram, and Lavender. Go in a dark room, get your diffuser going, and before you know it, you will feel better!

12. Insomnia

Lavender and Vetiver. I know that the lavender does help, when we started using the diffuser it was to help my daughter with her allergies. While it is helping with that, it definitely helped her sleep!

13. Fatigue

Wild Orange and Peppermint. I think this would be true simply because the smells would perk you up. They are so vibrant.

14. Congestion

Add three drops of peppermint, two drops each of eucalyptus and tea tree oil, and a drop of lemon to help breathe better again.

For Life: Topical

We started using essential oils for my oldest’s congestion issues about the same time that I read I could solve my wart issues with a combination of essential oils. Here are some of the great ideas that people have come up with to help solve problems.

If you know the item is something you have been having issues with, I recommend putting the oils together in a jar, grabbing your carrier oil of choice (mine is coconut oil) and rubbing it on when you need it. You can also use a roller if you have one.

15. Arthritis, Joint Pain, and Inflammation

Eight drops of lavender oil, five drops of black pepper oil, four drops each of juniper, lemon, and marjoram, and two drops of peppermint oil.

Rub it on twice a day when you are having pains as we mentioned. It will feel similar to icy hot which I love.

16. De-stress

If you are a DoTerra essential oils user, their combination is two drops of balance, two drops of serenity, one drop each of wild orange and elevation. Place on your wrist as needed to help de-stress.

17. Bruise Blend

Ten drops of lavender, ten drops of helichrysum, and five drops of fennel oil. Rub on when you have a bruise to help it go away quicker.

18. Razor Relief

Equal amounts of Lavender, Frankincense, Myrrh, Melaleuca, and Helichrysum. I need to write this one down, razor burns are no fun!

Twelve drops of lemon, eight drops of rosemary, and five drops of Cyprus. We all need this from time to time but what’s equally as helpful is a…

20. Memory Booster

Ten drops of Lavender, eight drops of lemon, five drops of rosemary, and two drops of cinnamon.

21. Nausea Blend

Thirty drops of lavender and ten drops of peppermint. Perfect for someone heading on a plane or a mother-to-be.

For Life: Internal

A couple of years before my mother and I had the discussion that she was a DoTerra representative, I received some Young Living samples of lemon and lime in a goody bag at a convention I had attended. I was surprised to find out that you could eat or drink some of the essential oils. Though I have only done the lemon once, just to see if it was true, I do believe that internalizing some of the oils will help for numerous things such as feeling better or adding taste to what you are making.

This section is designed to help you:

22. Fix a sore throat

Add lemon and oregano to some warm water or warm tea and drink up to make your throat feel better.

With the oregano, though I wouldn’t put more than one drop in the tea- it’s spicy!

23. Help with a Cough

Chantal over at Painted Tea Cup gives a full description of how to make this but she does use On Guard and Lemon Oil as a part of her sugar-free cough drops. I love home remedies, which is a big part of why I love essential oils in the first place!

24. Lose Weight

There are several different essential oils you can use for this purpose. They include:

  • Peppermint Oil which helps you stay fuller longer.
  • Fennel Oil which helps you to digest your food better and sleep better.
  • Grapefruit Oil which helps reduce fatty cells, such as cellulite.
  • Cinnamon which breaks down sugar.

If you can find a way to incorporate these items into your diet, you should be good to go.

25. Bake a Lavender Cake

I bet you didn’t see that one coming! Seriously, though, those oils you see in the small amounts at the craft store- the lavender one you can purchase from an essential oil distributor and it will work equally as well if not better!

26. Add flavor to oil pulling

I am a big fan of oil pulling, which is swishing coconut oil around your mouth for fifteen minutes and then spitting it out. It helps remove the plaque and people have stated that it has done more for them as well.

As much as I love oil pulling though, the taste is not always fabulous so if that’s what is stopping you, try adding a drop or two of peppermint oil or whatever your favorite flavor oil is. This makes it easier for you to keep your pearly whites white and help prevent tooth disease.

For Beauty

It’s not surprising to me that we can use essential oils to help us keep our daily routine or make us look better. These oils do a lot already but this is one more way for it to help make us live better day to day life’s that are more natural.

27. Skin Problems

Lavender oil, Frankincense oil, and Sandalwood oil will all help with skin care issues that you are having.

28. Itchy Scalp

Adding a few drops of lavender oil, cedarwood oil, and basil oil to your shampoo will help with the itchy dry scalp.

29. Reduce Age Spots

Put Frankincense oil directly onto the skin three times a day will help with age and sunspots.

30. Deep Conditioning for Hair

Mixing fifteen drops of rosewood oil with five drops of sandalwood oil and a drop of lavender oil together in a bag. Add this bag to warm water and then add to the scalp. Let soak for fifteen minutes before washing as you normally do.

31. Homemade Deodorant

Mixing coconut oil with beeswax and your favorite scent will create a deodorant that you love and enjoy smelling like instead of using the ones at the store that smell fake and you don’t get much of a choice between.

32. Dandruff Cure

Five drops of Rosemary oil and Lavender oil along with three tablespoons of unscented oil being massaged into the scalp and left on for ten minutes then washed as normal will cure the dandruff issue. I am going to try this one as well!

Conclusion

I am sure I have just tipped the iceberg on so many different things that essential oils can do to improve our lives. One thing I strive to do is create a balance between a life I can create and a life I can enjoy. Essential oils help me do that and I hope by showing you all the different ways they work, you have been inspired as well.
